Why your body can get stuck in survival mode—and practical ways to help it recover

Have you ever reached the end of a long day feeling completely exhausted, only to lie awake with your mind racing? Or maybe you've noticed you're constantly tense, easily startled, irritable, or unable to really relax, even when nothing seems immediately wrong.

If that sounds familiar, your body may be spending too much time in what's commonly known as "fight or flight" mode.

While this stress response is essential for survival, it's not designed to stay switched on all day, every day. When it does, it can begin affecting everything from your sleep and energy levels to your digestion, mood, and overall health.

Your body is wired to protect you

Your nervous system's primary job is to keep you alive. And thousands of years ago, that meant responding to immediate physical dangers. If one of our ancestors encountered a predator, the brain quickly prepared the body to either stand and fight or run for safety. That same response still exists today.

The difference now is that the "predator" is more likely to be an overflowing inbox, financial pressures, family responsibilities, or looming deadlines than anything with teeth.

When your brain senses a threat, your sympathetic nervous system—often called the "fight or flight" system—springs into action. Your heart rate increases, your breathing quickens, your muscles tighten, and stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol flood your body to help you react.

Once the danger has passed, your parasympathetic nervous system should take over. This is your body's "rest and digest" mode, which allows your heart rate to slow, digestion to resume normally, and your body to recover. The problem is that many of us never fully make that transition.

When stress becomes your default setting

Cortisol is often called the body's primary stress hormone, and for good reason. In the short term, it's incredibly useful. It helps you respond to challenges and get through difficult situations.

But when stress becomes chronic and cortisol remains elevated for weeks, months, or even years, it begins taking a toll.

Prolonged activation of the stress response has been linked to a wide range of health concerns, including:

  • High blood pressure and cardiovascular disease
  • Weakened immune function
  • Persistent muscle tension and headaches
  • Digestive problems such as reflux and irritable bowel syndrome
  • Brain fog, poor concentration, and disrupted sleep
  • Increased risk of anxiety and depression

Many people think of stress as something that only affects the mind. But in reality, it influences nearly every system in the body.

The signs aren't always obvious

One of the interesting things we see in chiropractic practice is that people don't usually book an appointment because they feel "stressed." Instead, they come in with ongoing neck pain, recurring headaches, chronic back pain, poor sleep, or muscle tension that simply won't go away. Sometimes those symptoms are accompanied by persistent fatigue, difficulty concentrating, or feeling emotionally drained.

While these issues can have many different causes, they can also be signs that the nervous system has been operating in an overactive sympathetic state for too long.

Why you can't simply "relax"

If you've ever told yourself, "I know I need to relax, but I just can't," you're certainly not alone.

When the nervous system has been under constant physical, chemical, or mental-emotional stress, it doesn't simply switch off because you decide it's time to unwind. Think of it like a car that's been revving at high RPMs for hours. Taking your foot off the gas is important, but the engine doesn't instantly return to idle. Your body works much the same way.

Even after a stressful event has passed, ongoing physical irritation, muscle tension, poor posture, disrupted sleep, or other stressors may continue sending signals that keep your nervous system on high alert.

The spine plays a bigger role than many people realize

Your brain and spinal cord form the central communication network for your entire body.

When you encounter something frightening—even a jump scare in a movie—your brain sends messages through the spinal cord that increase your heart rate, quicken your breathing, and prepare your muscles for action. Once your brain realizes you're safe, your parasympathetic nervous system helps everything settle back down. But chronic stress creates another challenge.

When we're under pressure, the muscles supporting the neck and spine naturally tighten. Over time, that tension can alter posture, restrict movement, and place ongoing mechanical stress on the spine.

In a neuro-functional chiropractic practice, we look at how spinal function may be influencing nervous system communication. The goal isn't simply to reduce pain—it's to help the nervous system function as efficiently as possible so the body is better equipped to adapt and recover.

Better sleep often becomes the turning point

One of the most rewarding things we hear from patients isn't always, "My back feels better." It's, "I'm finally sleeping through the night."

Pain and nerve irritation can make it difficult to get comfortable enough to fall asleep or stay asleep. At the same time, the body's stress response continues releasing adrenaline and cortisol, making restorative sleep even harder to achieve. When that cycle is interrupted and people begin sleeping more deeply, they often notice improvements in areas they weren't expecting.

  • They have more energy.
  • They're thinking more clearly.
  • They feel calmer.
  • They're better able to handle the everyday stresses that once felt overwhelming.

We're not claiming chiropractic care cures stress or burnout. However, by addressing physical sources of nerve irritation and supporting healthy nervous system function, many patients find their bodies are better able to recover and adapt.

There's no shortcut to nervous system health

It's understandable that people look for the latest supplement, wearable device, or sleep app to help them feel better. Technology can certainly provide useful information, but it can't replace the fundamentals. Burnout and chronic fatigue are complex conditions that develop over time. Recovery also takes time.

A resilient nervous system is built through consistent daily habits that tell your body it's safe to recover.

Three simple ways to support your nervous system

You don't have to overhaul your life overnight. Small changes, practiced consistently, can make a meaningful difference. Start by focusing on these habits:

  1. Keep a regular sleep schedule. Going to bed and waking up at roughly the same time each day helps regulate your body's natural recovery cycles.
  2. Move throughout the day. Motion stimulates your spine and nervous system while helping release mood-supporting chemicals like endorphins and dopamine. You don't have to join a gym—even a short walk counts.
  3. Take a digital detox walk. Spend 15 to 20 minutes walking without checking emails, scrolling social media, or listening to the news. Giving your brain a break from constant stimulation can help calm an overworked nervous system.

It's also worth taking inventory of the different kinds of stress in your life. I often encourage patients to think about three categories:

  1. Physical stress
  2. Chemical stress, including nutrition and medications
  3. Mental-emotional stress

Most of us have some combination of all three. The good news is that improving just one area can often make it easier to cope with the others.

The bottom line

Stress is part of life. Staying stuck in survival mode doesn't have to be.

The goal isn't to eliminate every source of stress—that's not realistic. The goal is to build a nervous system that's resilient enough to respond to challenges, recover efficiently, and return to a healthy balance.

Whether that starts with improving your sleep, moving more, reducing daily stressors, or having your nervous system assessed, small, consistent changes can have a profound effect over time.

Your body was designed to heal, recover, and adapt. Sometimes it simply needs the right support to do what it was built to do.
